Petroleum System Event Chart: Dynamic Basin Modeling & Risk Assessment

I’m sharing a dynamic Petroleum System Event Chart (PSEC) designed for basin analysis. This app automates the visualization of temporal relationships between geological elements—a critical step in reducing exploration uncertainty.

  • Technical Workflow: The app maps the chronology of source rock deposition, thermal maturation, hydrocarbon generation/migration, and trap/seal formation. Users can define the Critical Moment to visualize if the trap existed before the peak expulsion phase.

  • Engineering Features: Built using a Plotly-based Gantt architecture, the tool allows for “What-if” scenario modeling. It helps in assessing synchronicity risk (the timing of charge vs. trap formation) and preservation risk due to later tectonic uplift or erosion.
