Resource limits: memory or hard drive?

Hi, our app AquaPlan hit resource limits yesterday and I want to understand where exactly the cause lies. Is it too many people using it at once (RAM limits) or is it a cumulative build up of the cache in the hard drive. I haved used cached functions but its possible i am using them slightly wrong. Any insight on your end would be really appreciated.

I also remember seeing somewhere that apps for or from educational institutions or for public good could recieve additional resources, is there any way that is possible for our app?

The 1GB limit refers to RAM.
